Holiday Hours on Google: How Des Moines Businesses Avoid Lost Calls This Season
Wrong holiday hours on Google send customers to your competitors. Here is how Des Moines businesses can set special hours, post updates, and win the Small Business Saturday rush.
Picture a customer in Ankeny searching for a place to pick up a last-minute order the day before Thanksgiving. Google shows your business as open until 6 p.m. You actually closed at noon. They drive over, find a dark storefront, and leave a one-star review. That one wrong line of text on your Google Business Profile just cost you a sale, a customer, and your rating.
Holiday hours are one of the easiest things to fix and one of the most commonly missed. With Thanksgiving on November 26 and Small Business Saturday on November 28, now is the time to get this right.
Why Holiday Hours Matter More Than You Think
For most local searches, people see your hours right in the results, before they ever visit your website. If those hours are wrong, nothing else you have done to rank matters. Google also tends to show a "Hours might differ" notice on holidays when you have not confirmed your schedule, and that notice makes people hesitate.
Wrong hours cause three problems at once: wasted trips for customers, negative reviews, and calls you miss because your phone goes unanswered. All three are avoidable.
How to Set Special Hours on Your Google Business Profile
Step 1: Open your profile
Search for your business name while signed in to the Google account that manages the profile. You will see a management panel at the top of the results. Choose Edit profile, then Business hours.
Step 2: Add special hours
Look for the Special hours option. Add each date that differs from your normal schedule: Thanksgiving Day, the day before, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. Mark days you are closed as closed. Do not leave them blank.
Step 3: Do it for every location
If you operate more than one location in the Des Moines metro, such as West Des Moines, Urbandale, or Altoona, each profile has its own hours. Update every one.
Step 4: Check your other listings
Google is not the only place customers look. Update Facebook, Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, and your website footer so the story is consistent. Conflicting hours across sites also weaken the trust signals that help you rank.
Use Google Posts to Announce What Is Different
Special hours tell people when you are open. A Google Post tells them why they should come. Add a short post for each major event:
- Small Business Saturday: a specific offer, a featured product, or a free extra for customers who mention the post.
- Holiday ordering deadlines: "Order by December 18 for guaranteed delivery before Christmas."
- Extended hours: "Open until 9 p.m. every Friday in December."
Keep posts to a couple of sentences, add a real photo of your shop or team, and include a clear button such as Call now or Order online. Posts expire in about a week unless they are event posts, so schedule fresh ones through the season.
Refresh Your Photos for the Season
Upload three to five new photos: your decorated storefront, seasonal products, and your team. Fresh, genuine photos tell customers and Google that your business is active. Avoid stock images. People can tell, and so can the algorithm.
Prepare Your Phone and Your Team
Holiday traffic brings more calls. Make sure your voicemail greeting states your holiday hours, your website shows a banner with the same information, and your staff knows how to answer the most common questions. If you cannot staff the phones, consider using Google's call history feature to see which calls you missed and follow up the next business day.
Watch Your Reviews and Questions
During busy weeks, check your profile at least twice a week. Reply to reviews quickly, especially any that mention hours or wait times. A polite answer such as "Thanks for the feedback. We have updated our holiday schedule on Google to make it clearer" shows future customers that you pay attention.
A Simple Holiday Checklist
- Special hours entered for every holiday date, at every location
- Hours matched on Facebook, Yelp, Bing, Apple, and your website
- At least three Google Posts scheduled for November and December
- New, real photos uploaded
- Voicemail and website banner updated
- Review replies done within 48 hours
This takes under an hour and protects your busiest sales weeks of the year.
